Warning: proceed with caution if you’re hungry!
A teen from Sydney, Australia is living a double life: he’s a student by day and a chef by night. Jonathan Massaad – the 17-year-old school boy – was bitten by the baking bug at a young age.
He started dabbling in supermarket cake mixes and decorations at the age of 11, but these days, he creates sophisticated and complex treats and has his own dessert line, Sugar High Desserts. Just six years later, Massaad offers a variety of desserts, such as his beakers filled with Milo panna cotta and topped with Maltesers.
The most popular item on Massaad’s current menu – and his personal favorite – are the GayTime-inspired fudge pops. In addition to that, he also created a Choc Vegemite Cheesecake – inspired by the Cadbury creation – and S’mores cups.
The teen’s success was kick-started a year ago when event stylist Mary Nehme ordered his desserts for her functions. At the moment, Massaad is able to service 6-12 clients every weekend because he’s still in school. When it comes to his future plans, the young chef says that opening a patisserie would be best once he is within his final year at university completing a business course.
Jonathan’s business Sugar High Desserts has more than 20,000 followers on Instagram, and the teen is scheduled to appear on Channel 10’s The Living Room. Gladys Daoud – Massaad’s aunt – says that her nephew is very passionate about what he does and that he’s got a very big future ahead of him.
