It’s all fun and games until a teenager gets stuck in a giant Barney head.
Darby Risner – a 15-year-old girl from Trussville, Alabama – can tell you all about it. On Sunday night, the teen was at a slumber party with a group of friends when she noticed the Barney head and decided to scare them with it.
Risner said: “I thought to myself, ‘I’ll be fine, I can get it off whenever.'” Except she couldn’t, so the teen’s prank turned into a joke on her. She explained: “About 15 minutes had passed and I was like, ‘I need to get this off,’ because it was getting very hot and uncomfortable. I tried to wiggle out myself and then got help from a friend. My friend started having trouble so we got some of the other girls to help out. Then they all started pulling and nothing was budging.”
At one point, Risner’s friends covered her arms in petroleum jelly, and even though the Barney head moved up a bit, it still didn’t come off. They called the Trussville Fire Department for help, but since the teen and her friend’s mother didn’t want to “alarm the whole neighborhood with sirens,” they decided to drive to the fire station instead.
Vince Bruno – the Trussville Fire Department Lt. – said that the sight of Risner stuck in the giant Barney head was a “first” in his 33-year career. He added that the firefighters made a couple of “release cuts” into the head made of fiberglass, which then allowed them to “slide it right off.”
After 45 minutes of captivity, Risner was finally free. She said: “I may have learned my lesson, but maybe not. I’ve been stuck in many things before.”
