A teenager from Milford, Delaware has been labeled an inspiration thanks to a video of her impressive dance skills. Ballerina Lizzy Howell took the Internet by storm over the weekend – and single-handedly broke stereotypes about dancers’ bodies.
The clip, filmed in 2016, shows the 15-year-old performing a type of pirouette in ballet called a fouetté. And even though Lizzy posted it to her Instagram over a month ago, the video gained traction after Twitter user @sailorfemme shared it on her page on January 15.
The post has been retweeted more than 17,000 times and received over 35,000 likes. Many people praised the ballerina for her beauty and confidence, in addition to bringing a little more diversity to dance.
Still, Lizzy says she doesn’t want to be considered a plus-sized dancer: “If I can do everything that anyone else can, why should I be in a separate category?” The teen has been dancing since she was 5 years old and credits the activity for helping her through difficult times.
She concludes: “I do not like when people say, ‘Oh my gosh I can’t believe she’s better than me!’ That implies that plus-sized people can’t dance, and it makes me feel self-conscious. It shouldn’t matter how much I weigh, the only thing that should matter is my passion for dance.”
